Measuring Tips to Determine Table Size

Measuring Tips to Determine Table Size

Whether you're building, renovating, or updating furniture, it can be tough determining what size table you need. Measuring around doorways, walls, and existing furniture pieces adds to the challenge. Here are quick tips to determine what size will work for your space and how many you can gather at the table.

1. Measure Your Space.

If you have a closed off room, measure from wall to wall. If you have furniture in the room, a back door, island, or doorway- no problem. Measure from the wall to the front of the piece of furniture, back door, island, or doorway. If you have an open concept floorplan, measure the max area you have.

Once you have the length and width of the space, subtract 3' feet or 36" inches from both the length and the width of the room. The total will let you know the max size table you can have in your space. The 3' feet will allow room for chairs to scoot in and out and for walking space around the table.

2. Think About Shape.

Will your space be best for a rectangular, square, oval, or round table? If you have a square room, a round or square table will work.

3. Use Painter's Tape to Visualize the Layout.

Sometimes, you need to see what it will look like. Painter's Tape is a great tool as it doesn't leave residue that will stick to your flooring. Tape out the size you calculated and observe how this size works with your space. If you have dining chairs, you can place them around the table for a better picture.

4. How Many People Can I Seat?

Additional Recommendations:

  • The width of the table legs and chair seats can also impact the amount of people that can be seated at a table. The above suggestions will work for a 5" wide leg like the Husky and with our chair collection. If you plan to keep your current chairs and just order a table and want to ensure your chairs will work with the table, let us know and we can help!
  • Benches are a great addition to the table and can usually seat more people compared to chairs. It's also a great way to slide in all of the kids or grandkids at the table.
  • For trestle or pedestal style tables that you plan to have someone sit on the ends, the table needs to be a minimum of 7' long.
  • Have a rug or plan to buy one for your table? The rug should be at least 4' longer and wider than your table to allow for at least 24" on either side of the table for chairs.
